Important information about Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s affects everyone differently, and symptoms can change from day to day.
This means that not every exercise will be suitable for everyone, all of the time.
Because Parkinson’s can affect movement and balance, some exercises may involve a higher level of risk than for people without the condition. This may include:
- Balance difficulties
- Freezing of movement
- Falls
Looking after yourself while exercising
All exercise involves some level of risk. This may include:
- Falls or injury
- Fatigue or muscle soreness
- Dizziness
- Changes in symptoms
We encourage you to choose exercises that feel safe and appropriate for you.
You should:
- Move at your own pace
- Modify or skip any exercise that doesn’t feel right
- Stop straight away if you have chest pain, feel unwell, dizzy, unusually unsteady, or experience any significant or unusual pain. If this happens, you should seek medical advice.
- Make sure your exercise area is clear of obstacles, rugs, or hazards before you begin
Some people choose to exercise barefoot. Only do so if it feels appropriate and safe for you, and if your environment allows you to do so safely.
Before you start
We strongly encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you:
- Have balance or mobility difficulties
- Have heart or other health conditions
- Have had recent falls
- Are unsure whether exercise is right for you
